Rendu curieux par une interview de Jerome Harris pour AllAboutJazz, je suis aller écouter de plus près ce guitariste et bassiste. Il a passé la soixantaine cette année, un peu inaperçu à l'ombre de leaders tels que Sonny Rollins, Bob Stewart, Jack DeJohnette, Paul Motian, Bob Moses, Bobby Previte, David Krakauer et Fred Wesley, Ray Anderson, Amina Claudine Myers, Don Byron, Marty Ehrlich... Des contextes à la croisée des jazz les plus stimulants depuis la fin des années 80, où il joue soit de la guitare électrique (une Fender solidbody), soit de la basse dont une guitare basse acoustique de haute lutherie.

Je commencerai par ses contributions aux formations de Sonny Rollins de 1988 à 1994, avec des extraits vidéo live d'un formidable concert du saxophoniste, en 1992 à Münich en Allemagne. On sait le grand soin de Rollins pour choisir ses guitaristes : Jim Hall, René Thomas, Matsuo, Russell Malone, Bobby Broom...

Je fais ici un break (chorus) concernant les guitares et basses de Jerome Harris.



Il y a chez lui comme un condensé de ceux qui ont joué de la guitare de jazz sur un solidbody (l'invention de Les Paul pour Gibson, puis Leo Fender...) et d'une basse acoustique-électrique pas comme les autres.

mais là encore, une différence avec ces prestigieuses références, Jerome Harris utilise non un Fender Telecaster, mais une StratoCaster. Je laisse les amateurs de matos commenter ce point

Jerome Harris n'existe pas dans 'Le nouveau dictionnaire du jazz' édition 2011, mais on l'y trouve selon l'index aux pages 390, 516, 586, 1339. La morale de l'histoire, c'est que s'impose la nécessité d'un autre concept de "dictionnaire du jazz".
